The time of summer vacation is fast approaching, and every year parents must deal with the same dilemma: how to occupy their children. Most parents hope their children will use the summer wisely, rather than waste their time away in front of the television or gaming system or smartphone screen. And given the choice, most kids would probably prefer to do something different and fun this summer.
One great option for having kids do something different, fun and creative would be to participate in the various art classes that the El Paso Museum of Art is offering this summer.
From pet portraits to theater set design, from playing with clay to making batik (colorful cloth made with fabric dye and bees’ wax), from iPhone art to henna art, the El Paso Museum of Art Museum School offers a very broad selection of summer art camps, where children, ages 6-12, can learn about art techniques, themes and history and explore their creative talents.
Children participating in the art camps also get to experience the art museum through guided tours, and if they are aspiring art scholars, they will also have the newly opened Algur H. Meadows Library (the only Visual Arts library in the country) at their disposal.
The art camps run all summer long, from June 5 through August 8, on a weekly basis (Tuesday-Friday), either in the morning (from 9:30 a.m.- 12:00 p.m.) or in the afternoon (1:00-3:30 p.m.). Students are allowed to bring a healthy snack to enjoy during the scheduled break in each class.
Each camp/class costs $60 for El Paso Museum of Art members and $75 for non-members (with art supplies included).
For families who might find it challenging to afford the enrollment tuition, scholarships are available based on financial need. The El Paso Museum of Art received generous awards from JP Morgan Chase Foundation totaling $10,000. The awards will fund 100 scholarships for El Paso area youth to attend these summer art camps. Each scholarship, for one class, will be used to cover the cost of tuition and supplies. Interested students should apply by filling out the scholarship form and submitting it to the El Paso Museum of Art as soon as possible. Qualified applicants will receive scholarships in order of requests until all 100 are distributed. Download the application from the El Paso Museum of Art website at:
These scholarships contribute to the El Paso Museum of Art’s efforts in making art and the Museum accessible to everyone in El Paso.
For children with natural artistic inclinations or for children wanting to tap into their inner-creativity, these art camps serve to encourage all children to learn, explore, play and have fun with art, all while making new friends too, making the El Paso Museum of Art’s Summer Art Camps a terrific way for kids to pass the summer.
