History of Farah Manufacturing
In conjunction with the exhibit Awakening Our Giants: Farah Manufacturing Company, The Starting Point for Immigration, the El Paso Museum of History and the History Department of the University of Texas, El Paso, with generous funding from Humanities Texas, is pleased to present a series of four panel discussions that will discuss the history of what was once the largest employer in the city. These panel discussions will focus on Farah’s role in the garment industry; Farah Manufacturing and its implications for family business history; the Farah strike and boycott; and Farah Manufacturing and Latino Entrepreneurship. They will be held once a month beginning in September.
The first panel, on Farah's role in the garment industry, is scheduled for September 11th from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the El Paso Museum of History. The panel will be moderated by Dr. Maceo Dailey, who is an expert on local business history. Panelists will include Art August, a former Vice President of sales at Farah; Alec Vance, a former executive at both Farah and Levi; Ed Oppenheimer, former owner of Union Fashion; and Grace Vera, former Farah human resources executive.
The second panel, on Farah and family business history, will be held on October 9th from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the El Paso Museum of History. The panel will be moderated by Dr. Carmen Bianchi, the founder and director of the EMC Business Forum at San Diego State University, as well as the founder and executive director of the University of Texas at El Paso Family Business Forum. Panelists will include James C. Farah, son of Willie Farah and former president of Farah Manufacturing; Kenneth Farah, son of Willie and former Farah finance executive; Joe Chemali Jr., former Farah Vice President of manufacturing; Dan Cruse, former Farah Vice President of Human Resources; and Mike Mitchell, a Farah senior executive.
